About us.
Vagabond Highlands - Our Story.
Founded by Farmer Jules, a generational farmer with over 15 years of highland breeding experience, our farm’s mission is simple: to raise calm, healthy cattle that thrive in Queensland’s unique conditions. With the help of her daughters Jess and Haylee, Jules has led the way in Queensland by introducing genetic diversity and selectively breeding for temperament.
We use a combination of natural breeding techniques and modern science, including embryo transfer and artificial insemination, to ensure our Highland cattle are top-quality. We pride ourselves on our commitment to sustainability and animal welfare, ensuring that all our cattle live happy and healthy lives on our beautiful property.

The Highland Cattle ownership journey
Highland Cattle are intelligent, even tempered, and quiet enough to be halter-trained. Their distinctive long horns and unique appearance set them apart, while their natural disease resistance and longevity—often up to 20 years—make them a hardy breed. Known for their excellent mothering instincts and friendly nature make them the prefect addition to your family property.

Capture your special moments with us

Will one Highland Cow be ok on it's own in our property or do I need another cow?Remember cattle are herd animals so you will need to own at least two (both don’t need to be highland). You will also need a simple set of cattle yards to undertake animal husbandry, adequate fencing, feed and constant water supply. You will also need a PIC number and enough land to carry them. Usually 3-7 acres per animal depending on your rain fall. Jules is happy offer advice if requested.
-
Are your Highland Coos registered?Yes! All of our cattle are registered with the Australian Highland cattle society or the Poll Highland Cattle Society. The majority of our breeding cows are purebred. We have some with graded registration allowing us to produce quality calves for both stud and pet homes.
-
How do I stay in the know about your cows for sale?Simply join our mailing list - head to our email subscriber section and provide us your email address and 'sign up'. If you have signed up to our mailing list, you will be one of the first to know about any cattle available for sale (before they are advertised publicly on the website or social media pages!). When we are ready to start taking deposits on calves, those who have signed up to our mailing list will receive an email with all the details, and have first priority to buy. This is normally when the calves are all a couple of months old - but they will stay here with their dams until at least 6 months old.

How much do your Highland Coos cost?Steers are by far the best highlands if you are new to cattle or hobby farmers or don't want to breed in the near future. They don't have the hormones of bulls or cows on heat and are full of affection. Our crossbred and purebred steers are priced around $8,000 to $15,000+ These make ideal pets to learn on and are perfect therapy animals. All our bull calf weaners are DNA tested and registered as purebred with the AHCS or Poll Highland Society. If you are local, we are happy to support you in showing your new bull calf. Priced $10,000 to $18,000+ Please keep in mind these prices include our extensive handling program, from birth right up until they are ready to join your fold. Our calves are friendly and confident with people and are fully halter trained. They are able to be handfed, brushed and patted. We spend hundreds of hours with our calves making them the perfect pet and is reflected in the price. They all come with their own personal story and their very own brush, halter and favour food. They come with a full health history including recent drenching, 7 in 1 and tickfever vaccination, NLIS number and NVD. Best of all, they all come with ongoing breeder support for the life of the animal because we want to support you to help our coos live their best life.

Do you sell your Cattle Online via Marketplace?A lot of scammers have been using our Facebook and website photos to scam people into buying fake highlands. I ask all potential buyers to visit the farm and my highlands to ensure you and the highland are the best possible fit. If someone is asking for a deposit first, its not Vagabond Highlands, its a scam.
-
Are your Highland Coos friendly?Yes - absolutely! Our goal is to breed quiet, calm, friendly, confident cattle. All of our calves have extensive handling and training before they are ready to leave us. By the time they leave for their new homes, our calves are friendly with people, enjoy handfed treats, love pats and brushes, and can walk on the lead (halter trained). We do everything we can to set them and their new families up for success!
-
Where is your farm located? Our farm is located west of Brisbane, in the state of Queensland. We are just an 1 hrs drive west of Brisbane and 35 mins from Ipswich.

What is the best cow to buy if I'm considering breeding them?If you’re going to breed, buy the best quality and quietest bull you can afford as he determines you whole herd direction. We currently have some purebred registered bull calves and steers for $12,000 to $18 000+GST. All will be weaned at about 6-9 months fully vaccinated and halter trained.
